After an outage lasting 3 weeks, we are back online. During the
restoration process, several failures combined caused a signifignat
loss of data. However, everything is not lost. New technology
is now in place to prevent this from reoccuring.
The main JTech server seems to have caught
a variant of the linux.slapper worm. More information on this
worm can be found in the CERT
Advisory. Some downtime was experienced while the worm's files
were removed and firewall rules were created render the worm harmless.
Residual slowdowns will continue as the server catches up and
the worms's 'peer-to-peer' network continues to flood the server
with bogus traffic.
The domain name JTechWebSystems.com is
now correctly pointed at the server. You can use www.JTechWebSystems.com
when visiting the web site However, It would help me out a lot
if you would use "http://objects.JTechWebSystems.com/~username/"
inside worlds. This makes things easier in the long term, should
we ever need to separate the web server and user's server. The
web site has also received some finishing touches.
The server is happily chugging along in
its new home; everything went very smoothly. There are a few changes
you should be aware of:
-The new IP address is 66.45.6.37 This new IP should replace the
old in both the object path and web site fields of the world features.
You will also need to modify any links on your web site or those
within "activate url" commands to reflect the new IP.
- The domain "JTechWebSystems.com" will become available
shortly. When it does so, the path information will be changed
again. I will give you further information when the time comes.
- Billing will begin in the month of July. I will finalize contracts
and terms of service documents with each customer before then.
- JTech Web Systems became an official business today and it was
registered with the IRS, state and local governments.
As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

ActiveWorlds version 3.3 was released today.
To allow customers to take advantage of the new features the world
server was upgraded today. This caused some downtime as the old
server was turned off, the databases were converted to the 3.3
form, and the new server started. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Today the draft price list was released.
This is just to give everyone an idea of the prices I expect to
begin charging starting around July. Please take a look at it
here. Also, yesterday the contract
with Inflow (our new data center) was signed. The install date
is mid-June. Everything looks as if it's going to be great at
our new location. Look here for updates.
Maintenance has been scheduled for Sunday,
May 11 from 1pm until 6pm. Please check the maintenance
page for more details.
Just finished installing 1024mb of RAM
in the server. This replaces the 128mb that had been struggling
to keep up with the load. This extra boost of RAM allows the server
to have more processes waiting to respond to the HTTP requests,
and therefore faster connection times. Everything went smoothly,
sorry for the downtime.
